Love is ultimately the unconditional concern for someone in their presence, their thusness; but not merely a thusness of predicates or of an abstract universality but the light of the predicates that dance between the potentiality of the rupturing whole like a shadow which is the very wind beneath the beloved’s wings. In specificity love is the concern for someone in their wholeness, which is not merely their immediate actuality but the horizon of their glorious potentialities, the indefinite ascent of their presence drifting into the skies of their future. The pain of love that is the ethical concern is to watch someone betray their own wholeness, either stifling their ascent into a self idolatrous actuality which stutters the wings of potentiality from without the beloved or within their own freedom; or when the beloved chokes on the very wings of potentiality as they fly too close to the sun of dreams so terrifying they will destroy even them. The pain is enriched by the fact that one imbalance tips the scale of the other, for when we take hold of a beloved’s actuality we betray their potentiality to our own fears and possessiveness; yet when we let go and merely watch we run the risk of watching our lover ascending across the winds of potentiality get caught in a hurricane of imagination and delusion. In the face of the horrifying gust our only power is to let the winds of our words, our dialogue gently guide the beloved in another direction at a distance like an ambiguous providence that from outside appears coincidence. But the great hope of potentiality is that we teach each other to fly, that by simply flying myself I give the beloved new techniques to ride the storms of imagination into the glorious horizon of mystery and visa versa; this dialogue, this dance is the very movement of love where two actualities reflect into each other’s potentialities in the glorious journey done for the sake of nothing but the art and dance this dialogue of souls brings on the scene in their gentle ascent.
